The History Of The LeRoy R. Leber Funeral

In September 1953, LeRoy R. Leber graduated from Eckels College of Mortuary Science. In October 1953, LeRoy was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War, having served his country honorably for two years. Upon LeRoy's discharge from the United States Army in October 1955, he began his apprenticeship with Don Baumeister of the original Baumeister Funeral Home in York, PA.

In 1957, LeRoy passed all state board requirements and became a licensed funeral director. From 1957 through 1962, he was employed as the manager of the former Crane's Mens Store in downtown York and a supervisor at the former Cole Steel Manufacturing Company in York, PA. During this time frame, LeRoy assisted The Robert F. Koller Funeral Home and Baumeister Funeral Home with trade embalming and layout presentations.

In 1960, LeRoy and his wife Nancy Purchased a single-story home in the west end of York, PA (Shiloh) as their residence. Between 1960 and 1962, with aspirations to become full-time funeral directors, LeRoy and Nancy made the necessary changes. In 1962, The LeRoy R. Leber Funeral Home opened for business. The first funeral service was held for LeRoy's father, Russell C. Leber.

In 1989, son Leon Leber became the second generation of the Leber family to enter the family-owned and operated business, having graduated from P.I.M.S., The Pittsburg Institute of Mortuary Science. Leon served his apprenticeship working with his father and, in 1991, passed all state board requirements and became a licensed funeral director. The funeral home became incorporated in 1983. LeRoy, Nancy, and Leon serve as members of the corporation.

Upon the retirement of Nancy Leber in 1994, the second generation of the Leber Family, daughter Melinda Leber Kreiser joined the business as an office administrator and corporation secretary/treasurer.

Many changes were made in the 90s to the funeral home's interior to meet funeral service needs and add physically challenged accessibility to the funeral home according to OSHA requirements .

For over 60 years, LeRoy R. Leber Funeral Home Inc. has provided remembrance services for York County and surrounding areas. Now, their children continue to uphold the vision of their parents.
